This is my third autumn inspired recipe using pumpkin / squash this season!

My Mini Pumpkin “Cheese Cake” Pies will be great for a dessert for a dinner party or as cute treats on Halloween, and the Creamy Squash Soup will make your heart and tummy content in this chilly weather.

This time, I have come up with dinner rolls that have a subtle pumpkin taste, and the shape is inspired by, of course, the pumpkin! These buns are so cute that my kids got so excited when I baked them. They are great for Halloween parties as well as for a regular meal.

My go-to recipe for a dinner roll was shared once on my cheese buns’ recipe and it is still the same recipe I base any bread on. I changed it up a little bit by adding some pumpkin instead of eggs, and added more flour to counterbalance the more ‘liquid’ consistency of the dough from adding pumpkin. These buns are really yummy to eat with soup, to make into a hamburger bun, or just eat it on its own. They taste like dinner rolls with a hint of pumpkin. It is appetizing and it smells amazing.

This recipe does not contain any egg; however, it still turns out soft and fluffy when you tear them apart to eat…

I use a bread machine to get the dough ready and continue with rising and baking processes on my own. If you do not own a bread machine, you can simply knead the dough by hand. It just takes a lot of time and energy! (I used to knead the dough for at least 30 minutes before owning a machine)

Hope you enjoy!

Pumpkin Dinner Rolls

  • Difficulty: medium
  • Print

Ingredients (makes 8 buns):

  • 150 ml cold water
  • 50 grams of butter
  • 2 TBS of milk
  • 3 TBS of Pumpkin puree (from the can, or you can cook and puree yourself)
  • 3 TBS of sugar
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 330 grams of white flour
  • 1 tsp of dry yeast
  • 8 raisins

Directions:

  • Add everything above, except for the raisins, in the pan of the bread machine in the order of the ingredient list.
  • Set the machine to “Dough” setting and press Start. (My machine takes 1 1/2 hours)
  • Once it beeps, take out the dough onto a board that is lightly dusted with some flour and let it sit for 8 minutes.
  • Press the dough lightly with your palms to get rid of some gas and cut them into 8 pieces. Roll them into balls, and place these balls onto pans with parchment paper.
  • Using a knife or pastry cutter, cut small slits around each dough ball. (At this point, they don’t look like pumpkins yet. The rising will add the magic!)
  • Push a raisin on the middle of the each ball.
  • Leave the dough to rise in a warm room for 40 minutes. (In winter time, you can create a warm environment by turning the oven for a bit and then once it’s cooled down to about 38C/100F, you can leave them in there)
  • Bake them at 350 F for 13 minutes, and you are done!
